Much like human athletes, it is vital for a competing horse to be in peak physical condition prior to an event to avoid injury. Horse sports massage therapy is highly recommended for an all over muscle conditioning, this is best 2/3 days prior to an event as this allows for the therapist to work each muscle and surrounding tissue deeply. Massage can also take place 4 hours prior to an event but the massage would only last between 15 to 30 minutes and does not allow for such in depth work.
Benefits of pre event massage therapy:
- Reduces the risk of injury to the horse.
- Improves blood flow which aids recovery.
- Increases movement for a better performance.
- Improves muscle tone with regular massages.
Massaging prior to an event can also help to remove any spams or trigger points found, reducing the risk of injury.
Benefits of massage therapy post event:
- Aids recovery and reduces risk of later injury.
- Releases muscle tension caused from competing.
- Aids the recovery of any injuries the horse may have picked up during the event.
- Aids relaxation and anxiety caused which the horse may experience whilst competing.
Post massage therapy is recommended between 4 to 48 hours after the event.
It is important that we look after our horse muscles and wellbeing much like we would our own. It is recommended that a competing horse or a horse in a hard working environment has massage therapy every 4 to 6 weeks.
